Before we delve into the finer details, you should know that I don’t have anything against the whole notch trend, at least until companies figure out a better way. Its biggest argument is that it lets the user hide those notification and other icons beside the notch and have the rest of the display for other content. And I agree. Here’s what’s wrong with how LG has approached it, though — For starters, the company has opted for an LCD panel. The problem with that is if in case you’d like to hide the notch through the settings, the space around it won’t be entirely black. Every other flagship which offers this feature has an OLED screen which allows individual pixels to be turned off completely. On an LCD display, you’ll be still able to make out there’s some extra screen at the top since it would still have a subtle shade of black. In addition to that, LG is calling the notch and screen area flanking it a “second screen” in the settings for no apparent reason. That’s not all. The feature which lets you hide the notch also has a personalization option which you can use for decorating the notch’s sides with various gradients. That sort of beats the whole point of hiding the notch in the first place and don’t get me started on how gimmicky it looks. It just doesn’t seem like a well thought out execution. Apart from that, the new LG G7 ThinQ doesn’t bring anything new to the already crowded table. Its only stand out feature is an additional hardware key for triggering the Google Assistant and like Samsung, LG is also not allowing configuring it to any other action such as launching the camera. The rest of the G7’s hardware is quite standard for a 2018 flagship. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of RAM, a Quad HD display, two camera sensors on the rear, and wireless charging. It does, thankfully, retain the headphone jack and features an all-glass design. The speakers are one of the major highlights but unfortunately, they’re still located at the bottom and aren’t stereo.
