The tool is available as a free download and comes with a simple user interface. Before using the tool one needs to sign in using Google ID. Once the tool is fired it automatically starts backing up your drive. The settings can be changed from the preferences and it’s here that you mention the drives to be backed up.
Image Quality and Space saver
The tool also asks for image quality just like the Google Photos app; one can either opt in for an HQ with unlimited storage or High Quality with limited storage. The best part of the app is how it handles the photos backup. One can also set the option to upload newly added photos and videos to the cloud automatically. Google Backup and Sync will also help you save on your precious storage space by deleting the backed up items. This feature is particularly useful in machines like my MacBook that has only 128GB of storage to offer. Google is also allowing users to upgrade their Drive storage subscription from within the app. On the other hand, the Enterprise customers will be getting a new tool called Drive File Stream, this will be rolled out to G Suite Basic, Business, Education and Enterprise later this year.
The Backup and Sync lets users explicitly choose the folders or the Drives that are required to be sync. Users can also throttle the download and upload rate in the settings. Overall, the Backup and Sync seems to be a very simplistic approach to backing up files on the desktop. This will also help users to transfer image files from GoPro or DSLR to Google Photos in a much easier way.
